Methadone is a synthetic, long-acting opioid with pharmacologic actions qualitatively similar to morphine. Methadone is a good therapeutic alternative to morphine sulfate and other opioid analgesics in the treatment of severe chronic pain that can only be managed by opioid analgesics. Methadone is also used as substitution therapy for drug addiction.
